While the more well-known fashion designers were getting their expected media coverage by all the more well-known media outlets over at Bryant Park, I had fun exploring some up and coming designers. One of my finds was the high fashion of Karen Sabag, a budding NYC designer who presented her Fall/Winter 2010 collection at a private invite-only event during the Mercedes Benz Fashion Week on February 17, 2010. Known more for her bridal designs, Sabag wowed the crowd with wool and fur-detailed feminine suits to delicate cocktail minis and gowns of satin and lace. To top it all off, bringing up the tail end of the show was CariDee English, the Season 7 winner of America’s Next Top Model!
Of course, that’s aside from the complimentary yummy water by event sponsor Fiji…and the free pizza I got backstage

Lately, it seems that these entertainment award shows are only focusing on the hot fashions of the red carpet. Though I love fashion, I’m trying to watch a MUSIC awards show. That’s like Superbowl commentators talking about what the celebrities are wearing while watching the game rather than speculating on how the game may go.

During the Grammy Awards this past weekend, I heard more dished about who Carrie Underwood, Beyonce, and Lady Gaga were wearing than on who experts thought would take home an award. Then as the Grammy rolled on, the list of award recipients came to also be a disappointment. Perhaps, it’s because it is actually hard nowadays to find great music rather than just awarding popular artists who make the record labels’ money. For example, I think Taylor Swift’s bubble gum pop country was over-shined while Keri Hilson was short-changed. Not to say that Swift didn’t deserve her Grammys, because she does but may be not for Album of the Year. It was the highest selling album in 2009, selling over 2 million copies. But to win over Lady Gaga who brought new flava in our ears in 2009?!?

These days it’s hard to find good music for a few reasons. You could blame it on iTunes allowing the option to pick and choose what songs consumers can buy instead of buying complete albums; the lack of good music because the record labels are shelving ground-breaking artists and reluctant to infuse money into developing superstars; or the new norm of 360-recording deals that deter new artists — but the real culprit is the economy. I can name about eight artists off the top of my head that should have taken home a Grammy. If this was five years ago, more albums would have gone multi-platinum, ie. Hip Hop/R&B artists like Kid Cudi (Man on the Moon), Keri Hilson (In a Perfect World), or The-Dream (Love Vs Money), just to name a few.

I always hear raves from cities who have a great local artist that’s not getting enough spotlight shined on them, but that’s the case everywhere. It works like this, people, record labels don’t sign just anyone because they’re the music version of Make-A-Wish. It’s a business. They make most of their money on album sales. So when the economy is slow and people tighten the grip on their wallets, record labels need an all-around marketable artist regardless of the caliber of the music. I’m aching to hear some new revolutionizing music and see these artists get their due recognition. With that in mind, here are a few Hip Hop/R&B artists worth Googling — Wale, MaijaEvent, and Mickey Factz. I guarantee that when the economy does get back on track, these guys will be some of the front runners. Let’s also hope the Grammy Awards return to giving music credit where credit is due.

With the winter season on it’s way out, Spring/Summer fashion trade shows like Capsule are welcomed as we anticipate new, fresh colors and styles to warm our wardrobe. Capsule Mens rolled into NYC earlier last week to the Angel Orensanz Foundation building in the Lower East Side, with an extension at The Puck Building nearby. The venues and intimacy of this particular trade show adds to the ambiance of chic, artsy, urban mens streetwear. Additionally, the infusion of international labels added an eclectic vibe, ranging from our fellow domestics NYC, LA, and Miami to Canada to the fashion cores of Europe, Asia and New Zealand. Some of the exhibitors this year’s show included Public School (NYC), CREEP (Toronto), D.GNAK (Seoul), FreshJive (LA), Stolen Girlfriends Club (Auckland), Yuketen (Hermosa Beach), as well as more well-known labels like Keds, Jansport, New Balance, Nike, Stussy, and Timberland.

I loved the guys from Naked & Famous Denim. They caught my eye because denim jeans are like my second skin so I’m always looking for new flattering looks. Company Owner Brandon Svarc travels to Japan, buying up rare, raw and radical rope-dyed Japanese denim for his awesome apparel line. Brandon’s also been able to pick up some Japanese origami skills using his denim fabric. Naked & Famous Denim is based out of Canada and pokes fun at a Hollywood “celeb-obsessed” culture. However, these jeans really are worth their MSRP for their cut and fit, durability and comfortability. These kanooks really know their fashion denim!

Capsule Mens revealed both styles of clean preppy urban swagger with slick leather shoes, light spring knit sweater vests, light cotton tees with urban lifestyle graphics, man purses, and pressed denim jeans; as well as funky rugged outback urbanite, featuring textured leather boots, distressed denim, man packs, and neutral/natural colors. Upon leaving Capsule, I happened to walk past a couple of NYC fellas, each totally encompassing the looks I had just seen and looking smokin’ hot. I would have liked to follow them to take their photo for this blog but didn’t want to risk adding Stalking to my RAP sheet.

Well, I can’t wait till Capsule Womens – Feb 22&23!! In the meantime, I’ll make room in my closet.

Went strolling Fame. yesterday, expecting to see exciting fashion that would make pee in my pants for being so anxious that spring was coming. Clothes that would melt away winter where I could bloom like a young fashionista spring flower. To my disappointment, I had no urge to charge a booth and demand samples.
Upon my return home, sifting through the sparse business cards and catalogs I picked up at the trade show, I found a Luv2Luv 2010 Spring/Summer catalog. My boss must have thrown it in there to peruse as a joke. So perusing I did and a laugh I got. Luv2Luv is based in Plainview NJ, east of Hicksville, off the Long Island Expy. It’s geography already explains it all.
I think the story goes…Plain Jane gets her plain buddies to start an apparel line for upper middle to upper class cougars from Connetticutt spending their summers in the Hamptons. Once they have their target demographic in mind, they themselves continue to model their line of colorful faux batik print with odd-placed random spots of color. Perhaps it was bad lighting, a bad catalog; perhaps my already disappointed mood; perhaps cuz I’m not a upper middle class cougar; or perhaps it’s a style that’s supposed to grow on you…I don’t know, ask me again next week though I doubt my opinion will waiver on this one.




I got just one word for you - Hoozdooz. It’s the new website for fashion, like a “Craigslist” for the fashion world. If Luv2Luv, or other unlucky vendors, didn’t make good sales at Fame. may be they’ll find Hoozdooz.com helpful to post their stuff under “Sample Sales” section.
